Concrete proposals for thorough and rigorous monitoring of forest biodiversity in mainland France. Synthesis and lessons learnt from the PASSIFOR2 and PASSIFOR2bis projects

Abstract

The deployment of a more thorough monitoring of forest biodiversity seems necessary for improving the estimation and understanding of its state and dynamics linked to forest management choices and associated public policies. The PASSIFOR2 and PASSIFOR2BIS projects have developed systems for monitoring forest biodiversity in European France based on three different objectives. To develop these systems, several complementary aspects were considered: governance, the biodiversity compartments to be monitored, forestry management practices and statistical elements.

Highlights:
- We propose systems for monitoring the biodiversity of forests in France based on three different objectives.
- The monitoring approaches are based on a selection of eight biodiversity compartments, and integrate existing systems as well as others to be created.
- Much importance is given to the representativeness of the monitoring and/or the consideration of confounding factors.
